Are lab created diamonds real diamonds?
Yes! Lab created diamonds possess the same chemical, physical and optical properties as earth mined diamonds. This is what the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), the world’s foremost authority on diamonds, has to say about lab created diamonds:
"Both are diamonds, of course. Laboratory-grown diamonds are essentially chemically and optically the same as their natural counterparts" - Russell Shor, GIA Spokesperson
All diamonds consist of carbon in a crystalized isometric cubic system however, because lab grown diamonds are created in a controlled environment, there are much smaller percentages of trace substances and foreign materials trapped in the diamond when compared to its earth mined counterpart. This allows lab created diamonds to achieve high levels of clarity and colour.
The technology required to create a lab created diamond worthy of fine jewellery pieces was only recently invented approximately six years ago. The results achieved are so incredible that a trained gemmologist would require sophisticated equipment to detect the difference because the unaided human eye cannot.

The best diamond grading labs around the world offer diamond grading reports for all lab grown diamonds submitted to them for examination. Diamonds from IGI will come with a Laboratory Grown Diamond Report.
Your lab diamond grading report will include key quality factors such as Carat Weight, Colour Grade, Clarity Grade and Cut Grade. These indicators will provide you with an accurate representation of the quality of your diamond.
Each lab diamond grading report is numbered and stored within the laboratories databases to ensure that your diamond can be easily identified. The certification number is often etched on the girdle of lab created diamonds so that there is full traceability post grading, this ensures that you receive the exact diamond you have selected. How is a lab created diamond made?
There are two primary methods on how are diamonds created in a lab: High-pressure high-tension (HPHT) and CVD.
In HPHT, a small diamond seed is placed within a bed of carbon and then exposed to temperatures of approximately 1500 degrees Celsius and pressurized to a staggering 1.5million pounds per square inch. This melts the carbon and it starts to form around the diamond seed. Once it has reached the appropriate size, the diamond is carefully cooled, producing its rough form.
The second method is CVD where a seed diamond is heated to around 800 degrees Celsius and then filled with carbon-rich gas. These gases are then ionized into plasma using either microwaves or lasers, which leads to the carbon adhering to the diamond seed, producing the rough form.
Once the rough form has been achieved and treated, the diamonds are sent to the world’s diamond cutting capitals to be brought to life.
