Lab Created Diamonds in Australia

At Australis Jewels, we strive to provide our clients with pieces of exceptional quality for their special occasions. That is why we believe in embracing technological advances such as lab created diamonds. In doing so, we are able to push the limits of what is possible in our pieces.

Are lab created diamonds real diamonds?

Yes! Lab created diamonds possess the same chemical, physical and optical properties as earth mined diamonds. This is what the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), the world’s foremost authority on diamonds, has to say about lab created diamonds:

"Both are diamonds, of course. Laboratory-grown diamonds are essentially chemically and optically the same as their natural counterparts" - Russell Shor, GIA Spokesperson

All diamonds consist of carbon in a crystalized isometric cubic system however, because lab grown diamonds are created in a controlled environment, there are much smaller percentages of trace substances and foreign materials trapped in the diamond when compared to its earth mined counterpart. This allows lab created diamonds to achieve high levels of clarity and colour.

The technology required to create a lab created diamond worthy of fine jewellery pieces was only recently invented approximately six years ago. The results achieved are so incredible that a trained gemmologist would require sophisticated equipment to detect the difference because the unaided human eye cannot.

Why should I consider a Lab Created Diamond?

There are a number of reasons why you should consider a lab created diamond:

Lab grown diamonds allow you to maximise your financial value by receiving a diamond of exceptional quality when compared to an earth-mined diamond.

No matter what your budget is, a lab grown diamond will financially outperform an earth-mined diamond for value when comparing diamonds of the same carat weight, colour, clarity, and cut.

It is always important to understand the diamond you are purchasing, as not all diamonds are equal. One small difference in the colour, clarity, or cut can make a substantial difference in the appearance of your diamond. Learn about how to select the best diamond for you here.

The comparison video below clearly shows the quality difference between an earth-mined diamond and lab created diamond of the same carat weight and retail price. With a lab grown diamond, you will receive a diamond of superior Clarity and Colour for your financial investment.

Sustainability is never a word you hear associated with diamond mining; that is because the simple truth is that mining isn’t a sustainable practice.

Diamonds for the most part are mined in large scale mines, once the rough diamonds are extracted the mine is closed. Why? Because once a naturally occurring resource is completely removed it is no longer sustainable to continue mining.

The impact of large scale mining can be devastating on the local ecosystem especially in countries where regulations are not strictly enforced. While mines carry out rehabilitation in some countries, the disturbance of millions of tons of earth, redirection of waterways and pollution associated with large scale mining are a constant reminder of the damage that has occurred.

In addition to the environmental costs, the human-cost of diamond mining has been considerable; from the relocation of entire villages to the funding civil wars it’s hard to see why anyone would select a natural diamond over a lab created diamond.

With the growing popularity of lab diamonds within the jewellery industry and the obvious environmental and socioeconomic benefits is it any wonder that the world’s largest jewellery brand, Pandora has chosen to adopt lab created diamonds across its entire business chain!

We also see the biggest names on the red carpet embracing the brilliance of lab created diamonds. From Lady Gaga to the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle and even Emma Watson -- these famous celebrities are all wearers of lab grown diamonds!

Will I receive a diamond grading report or certificate with my Lab Created diamond engagement ring?

Yes! Each Australis Jewels lab created diamond engagement ring is delivered with a grading report from the world's leading gemmological laboratories. The International Gemmological Institute (IGI), being a world leader in lab diamond grading, is one of our preferred diamond grading laboratories.

The best diamond grading labs around the world offer diamond grading reports for all lab grown diamonds submitted to them for examination. Diamonds from IGI will come with a Laboratory Grown Diamond Report.

Your lab diamond grading report will include key quality factors such as Carat Weight, Colour Grade, Clarity Grade and Cut Grade. These indicators will provide you with an accurate representation of the quality of your diamond.

Each lab diamond grading report is numbered and stored within the laboratories databases to ensure that your diamond can be easily identified.  The certification number is often etched on the girdle of lab created diamonds so that there is full traceability post grading, this ensures that you receive the exact diamond you have selected. You can even do your own IGI diamond report  check online.

How is a lab created diamond made?

There are two primary methods on how are diamonds created in a lab: High-pressure high-tension (HPHT) and CVD.

In HPHT, a small diamond seed is placed within a bed of carbon and then exposed to temperatures of approximately 1500 degrees Celsius and pressurized to a staggering 1.5million pounds per square inch. This melts the carbon and it starts to form around the diamond seed. Once it has reached the appropriate size, the diamond is carefully cooled, producing its rough form.

The second method is CVD where a seed diamond is heated to around 800 degrees Celsius and then filled with carbon-rich gas. These gases are then ionized into plasma using either microwaves or lasers, which leads to the carbon adhering to the diamond seed, producing the rough form.

Once the rough form has been achieved and treated, the diamonds are sent to the world’s diamond cutting capitals to be brought to life.
